Inputs: images and channels

Most nodes take an image input: a stream of named layers, each with named channels (rgba.r, depth.z, N.x and so on), like an EXR file. One wire carries the beauty and every AOV.

Mask inputs take a channel: one plane of pixels. When you wire an image into a channel input, the wire picks the plane, by default rgba.a. You can pick another plane on the wire, such as depth.z or N.0. If the picked plane is missing, the mask counts as not connected. See Layers and channels.

Deep

Deep is its own stream. A deep pixel holds any number of samples, each with premultiplied colour, opacity and depth. Deep nodes connect only to deep nodes; DeepToImage flattens a deep stream into a regular image. See Deep compositing.
