Installation

System requirements

Blender5.2.0 or a newer 5.x release
Windows64-bit Windows on an x86-64 CPU with AVX2
Linuxx86-64 CPU with AVX2 and glibc 2.34 or newer. Moray is built on Rocky Linux 9, so RHEL / Rocky / Alma 9 and Ubuntu 22.04 or newer work; Rocky 8 and Ubuntu 20.04 do not.
macOSApple Silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs are not supported.
NVIDIA GPU (optional)Turing or newer with a recent driver: RTX 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 series, GTX 16 series, and data-centre cards such as T4, A10, A40, L4 and L40. Native GPU code is built for compute capability 7.5, 8.6 and 8.9, plus PTX that newer GPUs (RTX 50, H100) compile on first use. Not supported: A100 / A30 (compute 8.0) and anything older than Turing (GTX 10 series and earlier). Those machines render on the CPU.
Apple GPU (optional)Any Apple Silicon GPU (Metal).

With Execution Mode on Auto, Moray uses the GPU when it finds a supported one and the CPU otherwise.

Download

Download the zip for your platform from the Moray download page. The file is named moray_blender_5.2_<platform>_<version>.zip, where <platform> is windows-x86_64, linux-x86_64 or macos-arm64. The download is the same for the trial and for licensed use: a licence key unlocks the paid features in the build you already have.

Install

  1. In Blender: Edit > Preferences > Get Extensions, open the drop-down menu at the top right and choose Install from Disk..., then pick the zip. Dragging the zip onto Blender works too. Blender enables Moray once it is installed.
  2. Render Properties > Render Engine > Moray.
  3. Use the viewport's Rendered shading mode for interactive rendering (Material Preview is EEVEE).

Without a key, Moray runs as a trial. To license it, see Licensing.

Update

Install the newer zip the same way (Install from Disk...). Blender replaces the installed version. Your activation is kept: it belongs to the machine and user account, not to the extension version.

Remove

  1. If you want to use the seat on another machine, first Deactivate in Edit > Preferences > Add-ons > Moray (see Licensing).
  2. Edit > Preferences > Get Extensions, find Moray in the installed list, and uninstall it.

Licences of the parts

The parts carry different licences: the Python add-on is GPL-3.0-or-later, the native exporter moray_export and OpenMoonRay are Apache-2.0, and the out-of-process render worker and its Moray libraries are commercial. The moray/licenses/ folder in every package holds the texts: README.md maps each part to its licence and THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt covers every bundled library. Preferences > Add-ons > Moray has a button that opens the folder.
